Kyle Newman, Jedi Master
The Fanboys director talks models, superheroes and of course, fans.
I imagine there are certain situations where asking a director what the title of his film means is appropriate. This was not one of them. But with two brothers and a childhood in the 80s, I had no choice but to claim ignorance. Thankfully, alumni director (Drone, ’98) Kyle Newman wasn’t too hard on me, and his answer exhibited all that’s endearing about him as a man and as a filmmaker. “A fanboy is anyone who’s not afraid to wear their heart on their sleeve,” Kyle explained. And after realizing I was a Snoopy fangirl for much of my youth, it all started to make sense.
With access to George’s ranch and a supermodel wife (Jaime King, who coincidentally plays The Hot Girl in this film), Kyle is living every Fanboy’s dream. Since we all have a better chance of scoring the latter—no one is allowed in the ranch and this is the first movie to get permission to film there—we asked Kyle how he did it, in the hopes of injecting some confidence into all those lonely fanatics out there.
“I was always just myself. You have to be honest about who you are and passionate about what you love…and my wife is not only super talented and gorgeous but she loves the same dorky stuff that I do.”
The cast is a dream come true too—Princess Lea and Captain Kirk starring alongside Jay Bacharel and Seth Rogan is just as amazing as you’d imagine it to be. But the accolades really belong to the fans, who came out in droves to preserve the integrity of the film.
“The movie is made for fans, by fans. There was a time when we weren’t sure of the outcome of the movie…and then we received 300,000 emails from Star Wars fanatics saying they wanted the original storyline intact," explains Kyle. It was protected and made by them and that’s what makes it different from every other movie out there.”
And for the quick fire portion of the interview, we asked Kyle what his all-time favorite comics are:
And which comics he’d love to make into a movie:
