Art Therapy
Talking to artists makes us think about life. Here’s a little wisdom from Jennifer SteinkampWhat was the inspiration behind the works you're showing at ACME?
Orbit (2008-2009) is the depiction of the celestial mechanics of a planet spinning through its year located in an unknown solar system. Various trees with their leaves and flowers are blown by a turbulent wind conveying the passage of time. Spring, summer, fall and winter form the year.
Sharpie (2009) is a new approach for me. I drew about 60 abstract shapes with a sharpie pen on paper, then scanned them into the computer. I animated the drawings in relation to their shapes more or less. Up to now I have relied on imagery created in software.
What do you hope people feel/think about when they look at your work?
I would like people to have a sense of their body in relation to the work and the space.
And what was the last thing you saw that made you feel that way?
The fog covering Los Angeles this morning.
Was there a certain album you listened to while building these installations?
If I am painting on the computer I listen to old movies.
Best advice you've ever received?
Do what you want.
Three things you can’t live without?
Art, great food and fun.
Jennifer Steinkamp's installations are at ACME gallery in Los Angeles through November 14, 2009. For more info on Gen Art's Collector's Circle, click here and for more info on Jennifer click here. To see more photos from this event check out the full gallery.
