What inspired this collection? We were really inspired by this concept of different eras having their own individual visual concept of "the future". So there was an element of Mad Max in there, especially with the 80's trend that we are so into right now. The collection is very much about the notion of tribalism and primitivism but with the contrast of the idea of "future" and a clean beauty. We loved that those two worlds can coexist.
Is there a certain girl who embodies this collection?
We keep thinking of Grace Jones! We can't seem to get her out of our head!
Can you explain your design process?
Our collections always start with a detail. We get obsessed with a certain fabric treatment or a process, and then we build on it. It seems to always start with a discussion and then inevitably moves into an arts and craft moment where fabric is flying around and we are manically obsessed with developing new techniques. For this collection we were into knotting and wrapping, primitive techniques, but done in a refined way.
What were some of your favorite Spring 2010 collections?
We LOVED Proenza Schouler! The neon tie dye was sick in the head! Christopher Kane is always amazing as well. And we were of course really into the tribal tattoos at Rodarte!
Did you listen to any specific albums while working on this collection?
Mike Snow.
